The Swedish National Dyslexia Association - FMLS
FMLS has as its goal to actively support those who have learning disabilities, dyslexia and dyscalculia and to safeguard and monitor their interests.
The Association is formed by poeple with difficulties themselves and is organised in about sixty local chapters and county divisions. FMLS has currently 6.000 members. The main purpose is self-help and support. Information, meetings, conferences, courses and social gatherings are common activities. Some chapters organize family-camps and youth activities. FMLS as organisation is acknowledged as a handicap organisation (NGO) in Sweden. This means, for example, that governmental proposals and investigations concerning dyslexia a.s.o. are referred to the FMLS for consideration.
By its service called "The Writing Knot", (Skriv-Knuten) the Association offers information and counseling. Two councellors run this service, offering service by telephone or on a personal appointment basis.
FMLS publishes six issues of its Magazine Läs & Skriv (Read and Write) annually. The Magazine deals with different aspects of reading and writing difficulties. Examples of themes from recent issues are: Accessibility, Young People and Dyslexia, Dyslexia and Foreign Language Learning. 20,000 copies are printed and distributed to members, other subscribers as well as to employment offices, social insurance offices, schools and authorities.
Current projects
Accessing the Printed Word (Språka loss)
The purpose of this project is to collect existing knowledge and experience of what facilitates the reading process and raises obstacles to it in both printed and IT- based texts. This information is to be conveyed to the major producers of printed matter in today’s society - authorities, publishers of educational material and the mass media.
Accessing the Internet (Fungerande medier)
The purpose of this project is to collect existing knowledge and experience of what facilitates the use of Internet and raises obstacles to it in both printed text, animations, video, audiogram etc. This information is to be conveyed to the major producers of Internet services - writers, publishers authorities, procucers of educational material and the mass media.
IT Training
FMLS trains members and officials at different levels in the organisation in the use of computers.
FMLS cooperates with other Nordic Dyslexia Associations, and together we organize annual conferences.
FMLS is also a member of the European Dyslexia Association (EDA).
